ARTISTS PROFILE: Jo May
I am an established silk painting artist from Waipu Cove near Whangarei. Mostly self taught, I began painting when I was 16, mainly acrylic on board. Then I became a potter and spent 18 years making and selling my pottery creations all over NZ. During this time, I also trained as jewellery maker, selling & exhibiting my work in Galleries in Auckland.
I have now settled upon silk painting - mainly due to a love of the free- flow painting style, but also the vivid colours and texture silk allows. I love Northland - I love the climate and the beaches, the colours and the friendly people. I am inspired by the beauty of our coves and rock formations out at The Heads. I love the distinctive shapes of those hills - so recognisable to anyone who has been here even only once. I also enjoy painting native birds - so may colours and beautiful shapes, and so unique to NZ, and coastal scenes from all over the country.
I work from home in Waipu Cove, and although my studio is private, I exhibit my work in selected exclusive shows and galleries all over NZ.

PRODUCT INFORMATION
Silk painting
Firstly a design is needed, either in my head or pre-drawn on paper. Then the design is drawn onto the silk - a steady hand is needed as mistakes cannot be undone!
The silk is dried for 6 hours and heatset. Now I can add the colours, layer upon layer until I am happy. Another 6 hours drying, and then any touch-ups or special effects can be done.
I usually let the silk rest for at least a day or two, And then into a commercial steamer for half a day to set the colours.Then the silk is washed to remove any residual chemicals, and pressed, and is now ready for framing in its mount.
My husband hand makes all our matt boards and we set the silk in professionally .
I often paint special scenes for each area I sell in, making the images relevant to the stores, and to the local customers.
I do not to commissions, unless I am given total artistic license, preferring to paint for the pleasure of it rather than the money. Hence you will find my work very well priced.
Art Prints
Some images are then made into prints using a local professional offset printer & printed on to gloss art paper. No more than 100 prints of each size are made so they are very exclusive.
We also make wooden block mounted prints which do not need framing.
The prints and smaller originals are deliberately made to fit standard frame sizes so the customer can just buy a pre-made frame and pop them straight in.
We use an acid free foam board backing so that the tourist can either carry them or post them with little effort - the prints are so light they go as a letter making them very cheap to post.
How to buy them
Probably 50% of my work goes overseas, and is only sold via a small selection of tourist outlets in NZ, plus a few artist co -operatives. I do not sell in many stores as I would not be able to keep up with demand, and also I like to keep everything hand made. - as you can now see, every aspect of my work is totally handmade!

In ths shops and galleries, you can expect to pay up to $27 for small prints, $39 medium, $65 large and up to $95 for my new XXL prints (not shown on this website)
Originals range from $98 to $225 in the shops.
Most retail outlets sell limited edition prints taken from original silk paintings - if you are looking for a selection of the actual originals please look for the details highlighted in pink below. Please note these outlets sell originals that are matted and ready to frame. A selection of oiginals are available at all shows listed below too.
If you are interested in originals, and cannot make it to one of the galleries or shows, you are welcome to order an original similar to any print you see on this website. Originals in the galleries start at $98 for 16"x20" size - ready to frame, but originals painted to request start at $188 for 16" x40" minimum size and I must have total free artistic licence. Some larger orignals are pictured on the last page of this site.
Please note: There will be other retail outlets around NZ not listed here that sell my work in other approved & licensed forms such as notepads, other greeting cards, magnets, and different size prints . This website deals only with items handmade by myself, and outlets such as galleries and craft co-ops that I am associated with and deal directly myself

Prices in most galleries range from $26 to $59 for prints depending on the size, and $98 to $225 for the silk originals.
